          This fundamental work - written by the top American guru - is used by most American and European universities to teach students specializing in corporate culture.

Reference books

1. Geert Hofstede (1991).Culture and Organization- Software of the Mind. NXB McGraw-Hill.

          This book – written by the Dutch guru- is widely used by culture majors.

          The 4 main dimensions of national cultures of the world are approached. The author points out the respective impacts of each dimension on corporate business administration.

2. Jim Collins (2002). Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies.  Trẻ publisher

          This book was a best seller in the USA and in western countries: the author points out the reasons for the success of those corporations which have strong cultures

3. Tôn Thất Nguyễn Thiêm (2003). Market - strategy – structure - added value - competition - positioning - corporate development

          This is a best selling book in VN.  The author analyses the relatonship between leadership and corporate cultures

4. Trần Ngọc Thêm (2015). Vietnam value system -  from tradition to modern times and the way to the future

          The author discuses the main cultural characteristics of the Vietnamese people and points out, respectively, outcomes of each characteristic. Stududying this book, students will understand clearly the cultural roots of the behavior of corporate leadership

5. Phan Đình Quyền. Fundamental Types of Corporate Culture. Businessman margazine   edition 4-5  year 2008

 6. Phan Đình Quyền. Identifying some VN corporate culture characteristics nowadays – Businessman Margazine VN edition  March -2009

 

COURSE GOALS

          This course will equip learners with general knowledge of cultural functions in national and international business.

          Learners will understand the impact of national culture on corporate culture; grasp the levels of corporate culture, and the formation stages and changes within corporate culture.

          Upon finishing this course, the learners will know the steps and skills of  building corporate culture  which can be evaluated  according to corporate course learning outcomes, and in accordance with business administration learning outcomes.

Course Desription

          Learners will be equiped with general knowledge of business culture, functions of culture in business, basic elements and  aspects of  corporate  culture;  3 levels of corporate culture. Learners will gain insights into cultural characteristics of various countries  via Great Divide : Oriental and Western culultures  based on dimensions written by  three  research  Gurus : Geert Hofstede; Fons Trompenaars and Edgar H Schein in these respective works: Organizational Culture – Sofware of the Mind, Riding the Wave of Culture  and Corporate Culture - Survival Guide .

          Such dimensions are as follows:

          - Power distance   Uncertainty avoidance ;  Individualism- collectivism; Masculinity vs femininity

          - Universalism- particularism;  Specific vs diffuse culture; Status through achievement and ascription  (doing/ being);    Deal focus vs  relationship focus ;  How we relate to nature;  How we manage time…

          - The lecturer will analyse these  dimensions and point out their effects on business management .

          - Especially, the lecturer will relate these  issuses to the business management in Viet Nam on each  dimension.
